When Was the Last Time You Evaluated Your Own Professional Skills?

Fitness and healthcare professionals spend a lot of time evaluating other people.
You assess movement. You observe performance. You identify limitations. You track progress. You adjust the plan when something isn't working.
But here's a question worth thinking about this weekend:
When was the last time you assessed yourself as a professional?
Not your credentials. Not how many years you've been working. Your actual knowledge and skills today.
Where Are the Gaps in Your Professional Toolbox?
Every professional has them.
Maybe you feel confident with exercise programming but want a deeper understanding of biomechanics. Perhaps you're comfortable working with healthy fitness clients but want more education in post-rehabilitation exercise.
Maybe assessment is an area you'd like to strengthen, or you've encountered clients whose movement challenges made you realize there are questions you don't yet know how to answer.
That's not a failure of your education. It's one of the reasons professional education continues throughout a career.
Give Yourself a Professional Assessment
Ask yourself:
Which clients or situations challenge me the most?
Where do I find myself second-guessing programming decisions?
Which areas of anatomy or biomechanics could I understand better?
Am I confident assessing movement within my professional scope?
Do I understand why I'm selecting an exercise or primarily rely on familiar choices?
Is there a specialty I'd like to develop?
What skill would make me more valuable to my clients, patients, or athletes?
Your answers can give you a much clearer idea of what continuing education would actually be useful to you.
Choose Education With a Purpose
It's easy to collect courses and certifications.
The better approach is to identify a gap first and then look for education that helps you fill it.
PTCS offers professional education covering areas including human movement, biomechanics, functional assessment, exercise programming, corrective exercise, post-rehabilitation training, IASTM, anatomy and physiology, and sports performance.
We work with personal trainers, fitness professionals, strength coaches, physical therapists and PTAs, massage therapists, athletic trainers, and other fitness and allied-health professionals.
What Do You Want to Know That You Don't Know Today?
You don't have to master everything at once.
Pick one area. Identify one weakness. Find one subject you want to understand better.
The same principle you use with clients applies to your own professional development: assess where you are, identify where you want to go, and build a plan to get there.
This weekend might be a good time to decide what comes next.
