No Two Clients Are Alike: Why Personalized Training and Treatment Matter

Your client isn't a textbook case. So why would you give them a textbook program?

No two clients, patients, or athletes arrive with exactly the same body, abilities, limitations, medical history, experience, lifestyle, or goals.

That's where your education really gets put to the test.

You can know the exercises. You can understand treatment techniques. You can memorize protocols and learn the science.

But can you take that knowledge and adapt it to the individual in front of you?

At Pinnacle Training & Consulting Systems (PTCS), that's a skill we believe is essential for fitness and healthcare professionals.

When the Standard Approach Doesn't Fit

Imagine you're working with a client who wants to strength train, but they have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS)—a form of autonomic dysfunction that can make prolonged upright activity difficult.

And this may be a situation fitness and healthcare professionals encounter more often than they expect.

POTS has historically been considered relatively uncommon and is known to be significantly underdiagnosed. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, however, POTS and other forms of autonomic dysfunction have become increasingly recognized among people with Long COVID.

That makes awareness particularly important. Someone experiencing a racing heart, dizziness, fatigue, exercise intolerance, or other symptoms may not even know they have an autonomic disorder. Those symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for anxiety or attributed to being out of shape.

It's not the job of a personal trainer or other fitness professional to diagnose POTS. But it is important to understand that clients may arrive with diagnosed—or potentially unrecognized—health challenges that make a standard exercise program inappropriate for their abilities.

Now imagine that your client has been diagnosed with POTS and wants to build and maintain strength and help prevent deconditioning—but they can only tolerate standing for a few minutes at a time.

A traditional strength-training program built around prolonged periods of upright exercise may simply not work for that individual.

That doesn't necessarily mean strength training is off the table.

It means you may need a different path to the same goal.

Within the appropriate professional scope and medical guidance, that might mean considering seated, recumbent, or floor-based exercises, modifying rest periods, adjusting intensity or duration, progressing more gradually, and continually evaluating how the individual responds.

Suddenly, simply knowing a list of exercises isn't enough.

You need to understand why you're choosing them—and how to adapt what you know to the person in front of you.

Now Make It More Complicated...

Imagine an athlete comes to you for strength and performance training.

They're motivated. They have specific performance goals. They're ready to work.

There's just one problem—or, more accurately, several.

They have a history of multiple injuries, each presenting a different challenge. Maybe an old knee injury has largely recovered but still requires consideration. A shoulder is further along in rehabilitation. An ankle injury is more recent. Perhaps they're actively working with a physical therapist on another issue.

How do you train the athlete without losing sight of any of those individual challenges?

Now you're considering questions like:

  • What can they currently do safely and effectively?

  • What needs to be modified?

  • How might one limitation affect movement somewhere else?

  • Where are the current strength, mobility, or movement deficits?

  • What stage of recovery is each injury in?

  • How do you continue working toward the athlete's performance goals?

  • When should you collaborate with or refer back to another healthcare professional?

There's probably no chapter in a textbook titled “Here's Exactly What to Do With This Particular Person.”

That's where deeper knowledge becomes so valuable.

This Is Why We Teach the “Why”

At PTCS, we don't want you to simply memorize what to do.

We want to help you understand the science well enough to think about why, when, how, and for whom different approaches may be appropriate.

That means developing a deeper understanding of areas such as:

  • Human movement and biomechanics

  • Functional assessment

  • Exercise selection and programming

  • Corrective exercise

  • Injury and rehabilitation considerations

  • Performance training

  • Clinical reasoning and practical application

Because evidence-based doesn't mean one-size-fits-all.

Science provides the foundation. Assessment helps you understand the individual. Your education, experience, and professional judgment help you determine how to apply that knowledge appropriately within your scope of practice.

Your Clients Aren't One-Size-Fits-All. Your Professional Toolbox Shouldn't Be Either.

Real people are complicated.

They arrive with old injuries, new injuries, chronic conditions, movement limitations, different abilities, different lifestyles, different starting points, and very different goals.

The more you understand, the more options you have when the obvious answer isn't the right answer.

Through our online courses, live seminars, advanced certifications, educational videos, and mentoring opportunities, PTCS can help you continue building the knowledge and practical skills you need to tackle the challenges that don't fit neatly into a textbook formula.

Because ultimately, professional education isn't just about knowing more.

It's about being better prepared to help the individual who walks through your door.

Ready to expand your professional toolbox and learn how to apply science to the real-world challenges your clients, patients, and athletes bring to you?
