Are You Teaching Exercises or Teaching Movement?

Knowing hundreds of exercises can make your professional toolbox bigger.

But knowing why, when, and for whom to use them is what makes that toolbox useful.

For personal trainers, strength coaches, physical therapists, PTAs, athletic trainers, massage therapists, and other fitness and healthcare professionals, learning shouldn't stop at memorizing techniques or exercises. Understanding the human movement behind them can change the way you approach the people you work with.

The Same Exercise Isn't the Same Experience for Everyone

Give two people the exact same exercise and you may see two very different movements.

One person may perform it easily. Another may compensate, struggle with stability, have limited mobility, or simply use a completely different movement strategy.

That's where knowledge becomes more important than memorization.

Instead of only asking "How do I teach this exercise?", professionals can learn to ask better questions:

  • What am I seeing when this person moves?

  • What is this exercise intended to accomplish?

  • Is it appropriate for this individual?

  • Does it need to be modified?

  • How is the person responding?

  • When should it be progressed or changed?

Build Principles, Not Just an Exercise Library

Exercise trends come and go. New equipment arrives. New techniques become popular, and social media can deliver a seemingly endless stream of exercises to save for later.

But understanding anatomy, biomechanics, assessment, movement, and exercise programming gives you something much more durable.

It gives you principles you can apply when the exercise, client, patient, athlete, or situation changes.

The "Why" Matters

Learning another exercise can be useful.

Understanding why you might select it, what you're trying to accomplish, what you should observe, and when another approach might be more appropriate takes that knowledge further.

That's the difference between simply adding more tools and becoming better at deciding which tool belongs in your hand.
